A Living Manual for Businesslike Investing
Principles, mental models, and real-world analysis – continuously updated and organized as a reference for long-term value investors and business owners.
We took inspiration from the overall presentation and design of Berkshire Hathaway’s annual report when defining the appearance of Businesslike Investing. As a result, we chose a plain, minimalistic design and layout that prioritizes functionality over decoration. The content is intentionally text-heavy and focused on business fundamentals. In contrast to most financial blogs, the visual philosophy is unflashy and non-promotional, reflecting a substance-first approach where clarity and analysis matter more than presentation.
What Businesslike Investing is Not
At Businesslike Investing, you won’t find quick stock tips or flashy “deep dive” reports on individual companies. We do not provide commentary on short-term market movements or reactive assessments of company news. Our focus is on fundamentals, long-term thinking, and business-oriented analysis rather than chasing sensational headlines or trends.
Why you should read Businesslike Investing
Businesslike Investing is dedicated to clear, candid, and insightful writing about value investing. The goal is to present articles, analyses, and investment cases in a plainspoken, unpretentious, and accessible way — without hype, shortcuts, or unnecessary complexity. The content is long-term–oriented, disciplined, and owner-focused, emphasizing fundamentals, rational decision-making, and thoughtful capital allocation. Rather than chasing trends by short-term trading, the focus is on patient, risk-aware, and principle-based investing grounded in common sense and experience.

Businesslike Investing is an independent and educational resource — designed to be honest, transparent, and analytical, while respecting the reader’s intelligence and responsibility as an investor. It is intended as a living reference manual, developed over time to support readers in becoming successful value investors/business owners. Accordingly, the articles and case studies are organized into thematic areas that are examined from an investor’s perspective or from the viewpoint of a business owner:
- Business Fundamentals / Understanding the Business
- Business Valuation / Assessing Business Value
- Capital Allocation / Portfolio Management
- Behavioral Finance / Investors Temperament
- Corporate Governance / Investment Philosophy
- Case Studies
The Business Fundamentals section focuses on accounting basics, the differences between industries and business models, such as capital-intensive or asset-light, and how corporate governance works. Understanding the Business covers individual businesses, their competitive advantages, the people who run them, and how ownership and governance affect long-term results. Business Valuation examines valuation methods, including discounted cash flow, discounted dividend models, and relative measures such as price-to-earnings ratios. Assessing Business Value combines fundamental analysis and valuation techniques to determine intrinsic worth, emphasizing a margin of safety between price and value. Capital Allocation analyzes how capital is deployed within businesses, as intelligent allocation over time largely determines the long-term success of the business. Portfolio Management covers constructing and managing a portfolio of well-understood businesses, sized according to conviction and held with a long-term perspective. Behavioral Finance focuses on mental habits needed to avoid mistakes, ignore noise, and act sensibly when others are driven by fear or enthusiasm. Investor Temperament highlights patience, rational thinking, and the ability to remain disciplined when markets fluctuate or when others act emotionally.

Businesslike Investing is built on a simple idea: Investing should be approached with the same discipline, analysis, long-term thinking, and patience that defines a successful business. As Warren E. Buffett puts it:
“I am a better investor because I am a businessman and a better businessman because I am an investor”
Inspired by the timeless principles of Benjamin Graham, we focus on rational decision-making, intrinsic value, and maintaining a margin of safety. Our goal is to help investors learn to think like business owners — not speculators — and make thoughtful, evidence-based choices in a noisy market.
“Investing is most intelligent when it is most businesslike” – Benjamin Graham
No hype, no speculation, just intelligent, businesslike investing.
